Caving Opportunities
Cascade Caverns Campground in Bourne, TX, offers families a chance to explore its namesake cave, where scientists have recovered bones from mastodons and saber toothed tigers. The cave is currently inhabited by several unusual insects and animals, including Cliff and Leopard Frogs, Eastern Pipistrelle Bats, Cave Ground Beetles, Cave Crickets, and Cascade Caverns Salamanders. Hunting & Fly Fishing
Redbeard’s Ranch in Lebanon, MO: This campground offers quiet campsites on a wooded 295-acre ranch with weekend whitetail deer and wild turkey bow hunting. The park, which is located along the Niangua River, also offers weekend classes in fly-fishing, along with canoe, raft, and kayak rentals and hayrides. www.redbeardsranch.com

Big Meadow Family Campground in Townsend, TN: It’s very close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The ‘River Run’ usually starts in May and goes into September, depending on temperatures. Families who stay at Big Meadow Family Campground typically spend the whole day floating down the Little River, which is still considered to be a wild river. It is a gentle river, though, with depths of 3 to 18 feet. www.bigmeadowcampground.com
River Rafting, Mountain Biking & Rock Climbing
Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, CO: This park can be used as a base camp for mountain biking excursions as well as river rafting trips on the Arkansas River in the Bighorn, Brown’s, and Royal Gorge. Zip Lines, Rock Climbing & Paintball

Camp Dakota Family Camping and Paintball in Scotts Mills, OR: This park, located in the foothills of the Cascade mountains, roughly 35 miles east of Salem, offers numerous activities including paintball, zip lines, high-ropes challenge course, rock climbing wall, gold panning, treasure hunting with metal detectors, ATV trails, and an electric RC racing track. www.campdakota.com
Ventura Ranch KOA in Santa Paula, CA: This campground, which is about an hour and 15 minutes north of Los Angeles, features Park Model RV’s as well as a rock climbing wall, a pedal cart track, and 1,400 feet of zip lines, the longest campground zip line in the country. Hiking & Rock Climbing
Springs at Borrego RV Resort in Borrego Springs, CA: This RV resort is just outside Anza Borrego Desert State Park in Southern California, which has numerous hiking trails, canyons, and rock climbing areas. Onsite amenities include a spa and wellness center with massage services. During the winter months, astronomer Dennis Mammana holds evening star talks at the resort. www.springsatborrego.com

The Dardanelle Resort in Dardanelle, CA: This resort was established in 1923. It is located in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains 51 miles East of Sonora, CA, on Highway 108. Amenities include hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. This resort intentionally has no cell coverage and no Wi-Fi making it easy to enjoy the peaceful, breathtaking beauty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. dardanelle108.com/index.html

Biking, Hiking, Canoe & Kayaking
White Caps Campground in Westmore, VT: Located just 25 miles from the Canadian border and directly across the street from Lake Willoughby, you can go hiking and ride on biking trails that can take you on your own personal adventure. Traipse through secluded forests, climb the peaks, or wade through a stream. Paddle your kayak or canoe and view the wildlife from a vantage point that few are able to enjoy. Perhaps you will catch a glimpse of the legendary catamount—a Vermont species of cougar once thought to be extinct. www.whitecapscampground.com
