Beautiful, Historic Lighthouses On the Oregon Coast

Oregon is well known for its beautiful and historic lighthouses along the coast. If you are on Oregon beach vacations, you do not want to miss seeing at least one of the lighthouses you can find near the beaches. While visiting lighthouses during Oregon beach vacations, you will see scenic views and learn about Oregon history.

Yaquina Head

The Yaquina Head lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. It is located near Newport. The lighthouse, which was constructed in about a year, consists of more than 370,000 bricks. Take a guided tour of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. These tours are held Thursday through Tuesday between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. You should arrive at the site early and sign up for these tours.

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was restored and is currently a working lighthouse. A relighting ceremony was held in December 1996. Some consider this the oldest building located in Newport. The public can visit the lighthouse every day with the exception of holidays. From November to February, the lighthouse is not open on Mondays or Tuesdays. Also check out the Yaquina Bay State Park while visiting the lighthouse during your Oregon vacations.

Cape Blanco Lighthouse

The Cape Blanco Lighthouse is open for tours from April to October. The lighthouse and the Hughes House are both open during this timeframe, and you can take tours of the sites. Once you explore the buildings and learn about Oregon history, there are many other activities available at this site. You can go hiking, fishing, and horseback riding at the Cape Blanco State Park. Enjoy a lunch or snack at the picnic tables as well.

Umpqua River Lighthouse

The Umpqua River Lighthouse located near Reedsport is a great place to visit to learn about the history of lighthouses and their operation as well as United States’ history. While visiting the museum, learn about shipwrecks and transportation, see exhibits, and view historic photos. You can also take a tour of the lighthouse and walk to the top of it during your Oregon beach vacations. The lighthouse is currently in operation and is a great place to learn about Oregon history.

Coquille River Lighthouse

The Coquille River Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse close to Bandon. Learn about the area’s history from volunteers at the Bullards Beach State Park. Volunteers are on the site from the middle of May to the middle of October. Then explore the area and see beautiful views of the beach. You can also visit unique shops and restaurants near the Bullards Beach State Park.

While spending time exploring the coast of Oregon, make sure to schedule a trip to a lighthouse. You and your family can enjoy learning about the history of lighthouses and the history of Oregon while seeing scenic sites.
