Do the Gobble Wobble

| November 23, 2011 | 7 Comments

It’s not too late to sign up for your local Turkey Trot or Gobble Wobble. These races are a healthy, great way to kick-off Thanksgiving for you, a furry friend, and the whole family. Most of the races are 5K’s but you may be able to find shorter or longer distances depending on where you live. Signing up is easy. You can use websites like Active, Eventbrite, or Running in the USA to search for a race near you. Still undecided? Some races will let you sign up early Thanksgiving Day morning.

I will be jogging my way through a Turkey Trot along with some family and friends. Running is definitely not a requirement. You can walk, jog, run, or show your support from the cheering section. As an added bonus, many races are set up to be family friendly events. Where else can you dress up as a turkey and run through the streets? Besides, you never know who you might see. Last year I spotted Santa and his tiny Dachshund.

Our family ran the Ward Parkway Thanksgiving 5K in Kansas City. My husband and son ran together, while I ran with my girlfriends. Terrific Thanksgiving weather and a great way to start our day!

I try to never miss a turkey trot! I usually like the competitive, local race, but this year I mellowed out and literally trotted along with my much-slower husband and sister-in-law (while I pushed both kids in the double jogger). Slow or not, a turkey trot is one of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions!

This year my 11 year old son Will and I trotted together. We wore our matching Turker Trot long sleetve shirts and my husband took pictures of us along the 4 mile race. We had such a great time, and I felt so proud of him as we raced along together. I can’t wait for next year!
